Boycott Whole Foods

Whole Foods introduced rabbit meat to their stores in 2014. Shortly thereafter, the bunny-loving community began speaking out about it.

House Rabbit Society is a terrific resource for new bunny parents as well as anyone who is looking into adopting a rabbit. The HRS sent a very well-written letter to the co-CEO of Whole Foods asking him to reconsider the sale of “America’s third most popular companion mammal”. They also urged supporters to send their own letters petitioning Whole Foods to stop as well as calling for a boycott until rabbit meat was removed from the meat counter.

In this article, the HRS gives a great call to action as well as information on the deplorable conditions that the rabbits are being raised in and slaughtered. There are also great resources included, such as the link for the Change.org petition, boycott/protest materials, and the contact information for Whole Foods. There are many great resources to make it easy for individuals to speak out for this cause.

Whole Foods was once regarded as a great place for bunny parents to go shopping – a place where they could get healthy foods for all members of the family, small fuzzy ones included. It has now become a horror as rabbit meat lines the meat display. Until this unnecessary selling stops, looks like we bunny parents will be taking our money elsewhere.

Hello world!

Hello and welcome to the Friends Not Food Store Blog!

Friends Not Food started after seeing rabbit meat on the shelves of the local Whole Foods market. With five bunnies at home, this was a disturbing sight (especially since the grocery trip was mainly for their fresh foods!). Upon returning home, I hit the internet to see what other information I could find about this rabbit meat phenomenon. Turns out, this meat was being peddled as being some amazing source of lean protein – at exorbitant prices I might add.

Since then, information has come out on the deplorable conditions of the poor bunnies being raised to end up in the refrigerated section of your local Whole Foods. Many boycotts have taken place and many bunny parents have altogether stopped their patronage to what once was their stop of choice to feed both them and their fur babies. A Change.org petition is even circling around as a plea to keep these babies out of the meat aisle and can be found here!

In the meantime, we have decided that there must be something done to show our love of buns, hence Friends Not Food Store was born! Here you will find bunny related items that will allow you to show your support for these fuzzies in the cutest of ways. 10% of profits will be donated to local rabbit shelters to further advocate for the wellbeing of these small animals.

Follow along for adorable pictures of bunnies, handmade items that will let you further incorporate bunnies into your life, and the occasional bunstruction anecdote. You won’t regret it!
